Laser Drilling

Leading in micro Laser Drilling

Laser drilling is a method used in various sectors for creating microperforations with utmost precision. This technique is ideal for industries that require very small, accurate holes, such as the medical and semiconductor sectors, where traditional mechanical drilling is insufficient.

What is Laser Drilling?

In laser drilling, we use short pulse UV laser beams to drill minute holes, starting at just 8µ. This is smaller than a human hair strand, which is on average 70µ thick. Micro laser drilling allows us to drill holes that are ten times smaller than mechanically possible. Mechanical drilling is limited in the size - or rather how small - holes it can create.

By shooting the laser beam in a single pulse, holes are made. This allows us to create holes without cutting contours. As a result, we can quickly make a large number of holes.

What is Laser Drilling Used For?

Short pulse UV laser drilling is applied in specialized fields, such as the medical sector, for making extremely small parts. For example, components like tiny sieves that can filter particles larger than 20µ. In the semiconductor industry, the technique is used for making components with extremely accurate hole patterns, necessary for regulating gas flows.

What is the difference between Laser Drilling and Laser Ablation?

Laser drilling focuses on directly drilling holes, while laser ablation removes material layer by layer. This makes laser drilling ideal for tasks where extreme accuracy and repeatability are required. It is especially effective for making holes with small diameters and high precision. Think of producing very small holes with a diameter of 8µ to 80µ.

In Which Markets Do We Succesfully Apply it?

At Lasertec, we use microperforations in sectors that require a high degree of precision. This includes the medical world, where components often have microscopically small dimensions, to the semiconductor industry, where every micron counts.

The Advantages of Laser Drilling

The major advantage of laser drilling is the ability to produce very small, precise holes with a diameter starting from 8µ. This is unthinkable with traditional drilling methods.

The technique is fast, accurate, and causes minimal damage to the surrounding material. The precision and consistency of the holes, even at very high numbers, is unprecedented.
